On September 15, 2022, we had the pleasure of hosting Adrian Escalera, an alumnus of Cal Poly Pomona having graduated in 2012 with a math degree. After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, he received a Master’s Degree in Financial Engineering from Claremont University. Mr. Escalera’s impressive knowledge and unique abilities have brought him to work at top firms including MUFG, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, and now at Morgan Stanley where he is the Vice President of Institutional Securities Group.
During our meeting, Mr. Escalera shared the Three-line Defense Model that many banks use to mitigate potential risk. The phases include planning, execution, and reporting, all essential for internal audit and regulation. Mr. Escalera also gave insight into the Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review, also known as the CCAR. This regulatory framework was introduced by the Federal Reserve in 2009 after the Great Recession. Its main goal is to reduce the risk of a similar scenario ever occurring and is performed on both qualitative and quantitative bases. Once executed, companies can determine if they need more cash on hand.
Mr. Escalera's final recommendations for our students were very thoughtful. He shared to always be persistent and to not feel discouraged as there will be many tough times as a student. He also recommends our students not be afraid to take risks, reach out to people and take advantage now that they are young.
